Natural Vitamins are derived from natural plant sources through extraction & distillation process whereas Synthetic Vitamins are prepared from various chemicals mostly Petrochemicals through complex chemical processes in chemical plants.

For other Vitamins like A, B, C, D & K there is not much difference in the molecular structure between Natural & Synthetic form. The difference is limited to their source only. Our body assimilates both forms of these Vitamins in almost similar manner.

However, when we consider Vitamin E there is huge difference. Natural Vitamin E has one unique molecular structure which is recognized by our body. On the other hand, Synthetic Vitamin E molecule is made up of 8 different isomers (forms) out of which only one isomer resembles Natural Vitamin E molecule. Thus there is basic difference in molecules of Natural & Synthetic Vitamin E.

The molecular structure difference between Natural & Synthetic Vitamin E is very significant and causes following impacts –

- Our body recognizes only Natural Vitamin E form. Hence Natural Vitamin E has 100% Bio-potency i.e. availability to the body. In comparison as only one form of synthetic Vitamin E resembles Natural form it has Bio-potency of mere 12.5% to the body.

- The other seven unrecognized forms of Synthetic Vitamin E have to be excreted from the body. Thus they are unnecessary burden to the body.

Yes. The difference is huge! There is special transfer protein present in human liver called α-TTP (alpha-tocopherol transfer protein) which preferentially puts Natural Vitamin E in blood & tissues. The α-TTP mostly ignores Synthetic Vitamin E due to its 7 unrecognized isomers.

Both are Natural Vitamin E. However d-alpha tocopherol has very high content of alpha molecules which is most recognized form among all tocopherol molecules namely alpha, beta, gamma & delta. Thus it has highest bio-activity in human body.

Hence d-alpha tocopherol is mainly used as antioxidant & nutritional supplement meant for human consumption.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for d-alpha Tocopherol for adults is 15mg/Kg body weight which equals to 22.4 IU.

The recommended dosage for Natural Mixed Tocopherol to be used as Antioxidant depends upon the actual product formulation & total fat content. Satisfactory results are seen in the range 0.5gm-1gm/ Kg of product material.

d-alpha tocopherol is important nutrient & antioxidant for human consumption. It is used in food fortification and as nutritional supplement in the form of soft gelatin capsules.

Oxidation is a continuous & ongoing process. Once oxidation process sets in it can’t be reversed. Hence Natural Mixed Tocopherol should be added right in the beginning of any product formulation so that it shows its antioxidant effect from the beginning itself.

Natural Mixed Tocopherol is fairly heat stable at high temperatures in the range 80°C - 100°C. However as with any other substance its molecular concentration would start reducing with extended heat exposure time. Hence suitable overage dose can be added to maintain concentration of Tocopherol in those products which are exposed to heat.
